Being a volunteer search and rescue (SAR) member is one of the most rewarding and challenging experiences you can have. It requires a combination of physical fitness, mental toughness, and a willingness to put yourself in potentially dangerous situations to help others. But the satisfaction of knowing that you’ve helped save a life makes it all worth it.

As a SAR volunteer, you’ll be called upon to assist in a wide range of emergencies, from lost hikers and missing children to natural disasters and missing aircraft. You’ll need to be able to navigate rugged terrain, operate specialized equipment, and work well under pressure.

One of the most important skills for a SAR volunteer is the ability to remain calm and focused in stressful situations. Whether you’re working in a raging storm or trying to find a missing child in the dark, you’ll need to be able to think clearly and make quick decisions.

Another critical skill is the ability to work as part of a team. SAR missions often involve multiple agencies, and you’ll need to be able to communicate effectively and work well with others to ensure the mission is successful.

But being a SAR volunteer isn’t all about emergency response. There is also a lot of training and preparation that goes into being a SAR volunteer. We have regular training sessions and drills to keep our members up-to-date on the latest techniques and equipment. And you’ll need to be willing to invest time and energy into staying in top physical condition, as SAR missions can be physically demanding.

If you’re considering becoming a SAR volunteer, here are some things to keep in mind:

Being a volunteer SAR member is not for everyone, but for those who are cut out for it, it’s a truly rewarding experience that can make a real difference in people’s lives. It’s an opportunity to be a part of something bigger than yourself, to serve your community, and to make a real difference in the world.

Please talk to your spouse, your employer and other people to make sure they too understand this obligation. The officers of our organization are ready to assist should there be questions or concerns in your work place.
